is NEVER the content that goes viral Read time: 4 min
A while ago I wrote a raw post called The day I almost quit Climate Insiders.
It was the closest I have ever come to walking away from everything I had built. Six months later, people still write to me about it.
Not comments. Actual emails. Founders and investors telling me it changed how they think about storytelling and the use of social media.
The links in that post still get clicked. It still creates conversions and new relationships. Six months later.
Meanwhile the posts that went viral, the ones with hundreds of thousands of impressions, vanished instantly. No emails. No intros. No breakthroughs.
That contrast taught me something important about social media and about fundraising.
The work that moves people rarely goes viral. And the work that goes viral rarely moves the people who matter.
Viral creates attention. Transformative content creates conviction.
Viral is universal. Low friction. Low nuance. Low soul.
Which is why viral almost never helps you raise capital. Because fundraising is not about volume. It is about belief.
Investors fund what they believe. Not what they scroll past.
I once had a post hit 2,000,000 views. It generated almost nothing meaningful. Then I shared the story of almost walking away. It reached 7,000 people. But the right people. It led to forty emails. It sparked deep conversations. It brought investors who wanted to go further.
Because it did not inform. It transformed.
The same pattern shows up in pitching.
Founders often arrive with information. Traction. Tech milestones. TAM. Climate metrics. IRR. All needed. None of it creates belief on its own.
Belief comes from the shift behind the numbers. The moment the mission became personal. The moment the old way broke. The moment you knew your technology was inevitable.
If you show only the output they stay distant. If you show the journey they lean in.
Example.
Version 1: ”Our technology improves nuclear reactor efficiency by eighteen percent.”
Version 2:“Three months ago we were ready to give up. Our system kept failing at scale and we could not figure out why. It was painful because everything depended on that breakthrough. Then we noticed one tiny assumption we had never questioned. We fixed it. Efficiency jumped eighteen percent. That shift changed more than the numbers. It changed how we saw the future of the technology.”
Version 1 gets noted. Version 2 gets remembered and funded.
Transformation builds trust. Trust is the real currency of fundraising.
I see founders share wins without sharing the cost of the win. No friction. No shift. No truth.
Without the truth the story feels flat. Investors do not trust perfection. They trust transformation.
It is the same on social media. The posts that actually change lives are not the flashy ones. They are the honest ones. A specific struggle. A specific turning point. A specific transformation.
That same pattern is the backbone of a high conviction pitch. Specific struggle plus specific transformation creates belief.
A quick story.
Six months ago, I chatted with a founder who followed all the growth hacks. His impressions exploded. His leads collapsed.
He was performing instead of communicating. Optimizing for reach instead of resonance.
Then a reader emailed him saying Your content used to make me think differently. I do not feel that anymore.
That message hit him harder than any metric.
He threw everything out and rebuilt. Back to the messy reality of building climate tech inside broken systems. Failed physics. Rejected pilots. Breakthroughs that made the pain worth it.
His impressions dropped fifteen percent. His revenue grew two hundred forty percent.
Not because he posted more. Because he posted truth.
I feel the same pull. When a post hits twenty thousand instead of two hundred thousand views I question myself. But reach is not impact. Reach does not raise capital. Resonance does. Conviction does. Transformation does.
The messages that say This changed everything never come from the polished stuff. They come from the honest posts. The ones that scared me. The ones that said something real.
The lesson.
Your best work will probably never be your most popular work. Your strongest fundraising moment will not be the slide with the biggest number. It will be the story that made you build this in the first place.
So the next time you write or pitch ask yourself:
Not What will get attention but What truth will actually build belief
That is how you create resonance. That is how you build trust. And that is how you raise money in climate.
